Mark Retiring

Brother Mark is retiring after 39 years of teaching in the Clinton, Ia schools. Mark is a 1967 grad of the prestigious Savanna High School. (It was really the Illinois Math & Science Academy first). He went on to be a political science major at Knox College. Upon graduating, he took a variety of jobs before deciding to get a teaching certificate. He chose to go to the University of Arizona at Tucson for his degree as at that time they did not have out of state tuition.

He applied in Arizona as well as in the Savanna area. He was hired to teach at Lyons Jr High in Clinton. Ironically it is where our mother got her first teaching job. After a few years, he transferred to Clinton HS, where he has been since.

He has had tremendous success at Clinton as the volleyball coach. He has won over 700 games while there. One of the neatest things is that he has had both his son, Evan, and his daughter, Sarah as students in his classroom and as players on his teams.

I don't know for sure but it sounded to like me that coaching Evan in junior high basketball may not have been one of the most successful experiences in their father-son relationship. As a student, Evan claims his dad would not call on him, so his solution was he just talked and answered questions without being called on.

Not sure how Sarah's classroom experience went but I was very impressed by both Sarah and Mark how they handled the father-daughter coaching relationship. I know some of Mark's greatest joy was being able to coach her. He hopes to continue coaching volleyball, hopefully it will work out for him.

He is a prolific reader, mainly non-fiction. I don't know how many times my mom would say to me, "I don't know what happened, you used to like to read, I don't know why you can't read like Mark."

I am confident Mark will enjoy retirement. He is always driving some place, wanting to see something, and especially hanging out in Wisconsin. Maybe it is time for him to write a book instead of reading books!

Happy retirement.

Three stories about being financially prudent

Story #1:

So, I read that not only did Mike Lee sell his million dollar house after he was elected because he suddenly realized he would have to live on a Senator's salary for the next six years (you think that would be a consideration when deciding to run), but now it turns out that he is renting a house in the same neighborhood from the guy who bought his house.

No, you would think that if his family couldn't afford the mortgage, they might consider renting in a cheaper part of town.  Or maybe buying a new house in a cheaper part of town.  After all, Mike Lee is bringing home $174,000 a year.  Surely he could afford a home.  Seems like the financially prudent thing to do.  Then again, like I said earlier, it seems like making sure you can live on only $174,000 is something to consider BEFORE running for office.  THAT seems like the financially prudent thing to do.

Story #2

Senator Mike Lee, an expert in living financially prudently, wants to make sure we cut government programs to fund relief efforts in Oklahoma.

You know, cut programs that help people to pay for helping other people.

Heaven forbid we make companies pay their fair share of taxes.  Or the rich. Or, end subsidies for corporations making record profits.

But, that's another story, I guess.

Story #3

Man quits part time job.

Well, really, the story is about how West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder is not seeking re-election.  So, it's like he's turning in his two-weeks notice seven months early.

Mayor Winder says he is leaving not because of all the problems happening in his city, but because he needs a job that pays better.

Mind you, this is a part-time job that pays $35,000 a year.  He also works as a freelance consultant and has written some books.

Oh, it's a part time job that pays $35,000 a year and likely has great health care and other benefits as well.

All facts that he knew before he ran for the office.  Or should have known.  Or at least considered.  But, I digress.

It's like having a full-time job that pays $16.83 an hour, or double minimum wage.

I work two jobs -- one full time and one part time, and will probably make $30,000 this year, but with no benefits whatsoever.

Maybe I should be Mayor of West Valley.  Too bad I don't live there.

Jim Matheson: It's Official(ly over)

Dear Congressman Matheson:

I received your email today asking me to donate to your campaign, since Mia Love just announced she is going to run against you again next year.

With all due respect, Congressman, I'm starting to think that maybe having Mia be our congresswoman wouldn't be so bad, because on my number one issue, you and Mia have the exact same opinion.

On Thursday, you sent me an email saying that you once again voted for the repeal of ObamaCare.  In fact, you said that you have always voted for the repeal of ObamaCare.  You said that ObamaCare is a flawed bill.

On that, I agree.  However, ObamaCare is an improvement over what we would have if the numerous attempts to repeal the bill were successful.

Furthermore, YOU have the ability to fix ObamaCare.  So far, I have seen exactly ZERO proposals from you to fix ObamaCare.  Well, other than just repeal.

Yes, you are only one of 435 Congressmen.  However, one of the glories of Congress is that ANY Congressman can propose a bill.

Yet, you don't.

You have seniority.  You've been in Congress since 2001.  That's longer than any other current Representative from Utah.  In fact, only 119 Congresspeople have been there longer than you.  That means you have more seniority than 73% of Congress.

So, where's your proposal?  How are you going to fix the problem?

Congressman Matheson, I want to like you.  I'm a moderate Democrat.  I voted for you in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010.  In fact, in 2010, I voted for you 3 times -- at convention, in a primary, and in the general election.  In 2012, I was redistricted out of your district, but I told every friend I could that lived in your district why they should vote for you instead of Mia Love.  My voting for you predates my being a Democrat.  I've thrown money your way several times.  I've defended you.  I've overlooked some of your other votes.  I've overlooked your refusal to hold real town halls and talk to your constituents.

But, that's over.  Until you step up, show some leadership, and propose a solution, we're officially over.  No money, no volunteering, no defending you to my more liberal (or conservative) friends.

In fact, when friends in the Fourth District ask me if they should vote for in next year's congressional race, my answer will be simple:

It doesn't really matter, because my health and well being doesn't really matter to either candidate.

Sunday, May 26

This is a picture of Bill Allen with his
12 year old brother outside the family
farm in Alta, IL before Bill left for Europe.
This would have been the last time Ben
saw his brother.
Sunday, May 26, I have the privilege of delivering the sermon at 1st Presby at both the 9:00am and 11:00am services. With this being Memorial Day weekend, the theme of my message is going to be talking about Bill Allen. He was a Knox grad, who taught at Galesburg High School. He chose in 1943 to enlist in the Army to fight in WW2. His division fought in every major battle in northern Europe.

He was a prolific writer and wrote letters to his parents, his family, and to friends back in Galesburg. The Allen family kept all of the letters and shortly after the war, they published the letters in a book.

The letters describe life from boot camp in Georgia, staging in England, liberating France, and fighting to within miles of Berlin. Bill Allen was killed in April of 1945, just 19 days before V-E Day. His story is a story of courage, commitment and sacrifice. His letters give a first hand account of life as a soldier.

I would like to invite you to attend either service on May 26 as I share this story.

Republicans Led By Loan Shark, I hope he makes winning every race "Number 1" Priority

Sltrib.com, today:
Former Salt Lake County Republican Party Chairman James Evans won a convincing victory Saturday as the new Utah Republican Party Chairman, capturing nearly 60 percent of the vote in the three-way race.
Evans becomes the first African-American chairman of the state party.
Evans owns Checkline, a chain of payday lending stores.
He served as Salt Lake County Chairman from 2005 to 2009, and touted that experience and record as grounds for electing him.

All I can say is "Yay!"  Not only will it bring the payday loan industry back into the limelight (watch for some pro-payday loan stories in the upcoming session, I guarantee it), but there is another reason.  In 2007, as he won reelection as Chair, Mr Evans said that his "Number 1" priority was to defeat Peter Corroon in 2008.  Corroon went on to recieve over 65% of the vote.  In 2006, Chairman Evans said his top priority was defeating County Clerk Sherrie Swenson.  Swenson won 57% of the vote.  He also personally help the Republican incumbent Sheriff (Presumably more than a chairman usually personally helps a candidate) in 2006.  Challenger Jim Winder walked away with only 63.75% of the vote.

If this is the record he ran on, I'm beginning to wonder if Democrats hacked the GOP voting system today.

Because really, in politics, it's all about winning.  And Democrats need all the help they can get.  And James Evans is a gift from the heavens.

League Getting Close

It won't be long and we will be starting up with our camps and summer leagues. A sure sign that it is getting close is when our new summer league t-shirts arrive.

Jessica's T-Shirts

When you play 2 sports, you get a lot of t-shirts. What do you do with all the t-shirts? One idea is to make a quilt. Jessica Lieber has turned all of her golf and basketball t-shirts into this huge quilt- pretty impressive.

Bob Aagard for LD 18 Chair

Bob Aagard has had a life long interest in politics dating back to Jr High, when he polled 100 of his classmates in Jr High to see who they would vote for if they could vote in that year's Presidential Election.  The year was 1992.

Bob founded Mormons for Dean in 2003, one of the first "public interest" groups founded in support of Howard Dean's 2004 candidacy for President.  Since then, he has volunteered for many races, including those for Peter Corroon (Salt Lake County Mayor 2004, 2008; Governor 2010), and Pete Ashdown (Senate 2006).  Bob founded Mormons for Obama in 2007, and worked for the Utah Democratic Party in 2007-2008.

In 2011, Bob saw the injustice of HB 477, which was the much disliked bill that harmed Utah citizens' ability to access government records through GRAMA.  He organized the first anti-HB477 rally at the Capitol within 48 hours (before the Governor signed the bill), and was one of the founders of the SAVE GRAMA PIC that lead the initiative drive to reverse the bill.  Shortly after the initiative drive started, the Legislature reversed the law in a special session, something they rarely do.  Because of his efforts, he was named an OpenGov Champion by the Sunlight Foundation based in Washington DC.

Bob recently relocated to Farmington, and is looking forward to helping get Democrats elected in his new home.

The Heat- Why???

Explain to me why the following happened in the Bulls-Heat game #1....

LeBron wears a pair of shoes he has NEVER worn before. It was his special Nike "MVP" editions.  At half time he changes into his regular shoes. Where is a player's focus when they are doing that?

James, Allen, and Wade all had plays where they missed a shot, stayed to plead their case the ref that they were fouled. While they were pleading their case, the Bulls were scoring on a 5 vs. 4 fastbreak.

At the end of the game with about 20 seconds to go, only Allen tried to get the ball and tried to foul. The rest just stood and gave up.

Why did the Heat do this? My answer is that all three of these acts were acts of arrogance. The game was not about winning or team, it was about look at me- I am the MVP. It could not be that a Bull's defender made a player or that one of the Heat stars actually made a bad shot-- it had to be a foul. And fouling and playing the game out until the buzzer is not something stars should have to do.

Will the Bulls win the series? Probably not, but they have surprised us over and over with something called toughness and team work. I just know the Bulls are fun to watch because of how they play the game, while the Heat too often represent all that is wrong with pro athletes.
